The Statewide Convening for Higher Education in Texas Prisons was an incredible success!

This dynamic event brought together members of the Texas higher education in prison community to connect, learn, and collaborate. The energy was palpable as we achieved our goals of fostering networking, enlightening policy makers and business leaders, and envisioning the future of HEP programs in Texas. We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who participated in the Higher Education in Texas Prisons: A Collective Conversation & Networking event. Your involvement was instrumental in making this convening a resounding success.

Special thanks to our keynote speakers and session leaders who provided invaluable insights and sparked meaningful conversations. We also appreciate the Vera Institute of Justice, Texas 2036, Lee College, Alabama Prison Arts and Education Project, Tennessee Higher Education Initiative, and Jobs for the Future for their contributions to our breakout sessions.

  • HEP 101: Led by the Vera Institute of Justice, this session explored the practice of higher education in prison in Texas, offering a comprehensive "how-to" guide for all.
  • Deep Dive on Data Infrastructure: Texas 2036 and Lee College facilitated a deep dive into the data infrastructure necessary for effective HEP research and practice.
  • Student Voices, Reentry, and Connections to Campus and Career: Alabama Prison Arts and Education Project, Tennessee Higher Education Initiative, and Jobs for the Future led inspiring discussions on student-centered programming and reentry pathways.

The event was elevated by the enthusiastic participation and collaboration of all attendees. The energy and commitment displayed by everyone present underscored the importance of our collective efforts in advancing higher education in prison across Texas.
