University of Saint Mary: English Instructor

The University of Saint Mary’s Prison Education Program (PEP), re-established in 2021, offers associate and bachelor’s degrees in business administration to incarcerated individuals at multiple correctional facilities, including Lansing Correctional Facility, the United States Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, and potentially the United States Federal Penitentiary in Leavenworth. The program seeks an English Instructor to teach English Composition and Literature courses in person. Responsibilities include developing and delivering engaging courses, assessing student progress, providing feedback, and collaborating with program administrators and faculty. Candidates must have a Master’s degree or higher in English or a related field, previous teaching experience, and a commitment to educational equity and social justice. Preferred qualifications include experience teaching in correctional facilities and innovative teaching strategies. Interested candidates should apply online. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Teach classes in-personas assigned:
    • Principles of English or English Comp I
    • English Comp II
    • Upper-Level Literature Courses (variable)
  • Prepare syllabi and deliver curriculum appropriate for the course assigned
  • Maintain effective and timely student assessment and feedback
  • Manage and foster an inclusive educational environment to serve all learners
  • Maintain student attendance records per university policy
  • Submit mid-term and final grades on time
  • Demonstrate professionalism with students, faculty, staff, and administration
  • Timely attendance at all required training, Division meetings, and university-related meetings
  • Complete all required training, including training on Engage LMS
  • Maintain expertise in current teaching and discipline technologies.
  • Perform other duties as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • MA in English or master’s degree + 18 graduate credits in content area
  • A minimum of three years of teaching at the college level is required.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills with students, faculty, staff, and administrators.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Commitment to prison rehabilitation.
  • Philosophically aligned with the mission and values of USM
  • Experience working in a prison is preferred.
  • Ability to pass the Department of Corrections/KBI background check required.
