UnCommon Law: Director of Development and Communications

The Director of Development and Communications will be a strategic leader, a strong communicator, and an effective team manager responsible for stewarding our fundraising efforts and crafting and marketing UnCommon Law’s public image. Skills that are critical for success in this position include the ability to develop relationships, manage multiple projects and strong attention to detail. The Director of Development and Communications reports directly to the Executive Director, works closely with the Board, and supports the entire office in marketing and fundraising efforts.

This role will be public-facing, and will include forging relationships and partnerships with donors, foundation partners, key grantmaking staff from government agencies, community members, and other stakeholders who support UnCommon Law’s work. We are looking for a seasoned fundraiser with previous management and strategic leadership experience. An ideal candidate shares UnCommon Law’s passion for justice and healing for people incarcerated for serious and violent crimes.

Salary

$105,000

Examples of Key Duties and Responsibilities

Fundraising
  • Spearheads strategy development and implementation to meet the organization’s short- and long-term fundraising objectives, including management of  other staff members (1-2)
  • Lead organizational fundraiser, including planned, annual and deferred giving approaches to individuals, institutional giving (foundations), and corporations
  • Researches and submits grant proposals and grant budgets, maintains grant calendar, ensures accurate reporting on all grants, and manages relationships with key funders
  • Develop and maintain major donor portfolios for themselves and leadership, supporting relationships through moves management with high net worth individuals and core supporters alongside the Executive Team and Board
  • Sets and manages annual fundraising calendar, including annual UnCommon Heroes gala and other key events, as well as additional fundraising campaigns with an emphasis on developing strategic partnerships with local and regional organizations
  • Acts as a spokesperson for the organization with community members, the media, prospective funders and other key stakeholders
Communications
  • Produces all core marketing collateral and media assets for the organization, including iterating on topline messaging and talking points, organizational voice and tone, identifying key audiences and corresponding messaging, and designing/maintaining org-wide external communications protocols
  • Create, draft, and implement the development of new campaign communications including an e-newsletter, website content, and campaign videos
  • Manage and complete the acknowledgment process for campaign gifts and pledges. Craft formal thank you letters, pledge payment reminders and agreements, track payment schedules in CRM.  Track receipt of gifts/pledge payments and cash flow.  Draft personalized notes in the voice of the Executive Team and volunteers

Experience

  • At least 3 years in a similar role leading fundraising for a growing non-profit (budget at least 2-3 million)
  • Donor fundraising experience: Demonstrated high-level donor fundraising experience, including identifying and securing new donors. Proven ability to develop strategies to cultivate and sustain donor relationships. Experience successfully soliciting major gifts from individuals, portfolios ranging from $3-$10 million.
  • Grants management experience: Demonstrated ability to secure major grant funding from foundations and government sources, including developing grant budgets, and previous experience reporting on multiple concurrent, restricted grant sources.
  • Communications: Experience developing topline messaging and branding for organizations; additional experience creating assets and marketing collateral, including videos, web copy, annual reports, and other key materials. Demonstrated ability to think critically about audience segmentation and targeted messaging. Proven ability to grow an organization’s audience/base using email, social media, and other communications.
  • Events: Experience coordinating major events, including working with external vendors. Proven ability to achieve attendance goals through effective marketing; track record of successful fundraising at events.
  • Team leadership: Experience managing a team and leading cross-functional collaboration. Experience incorporating input as well as setting a vision.
