Position Summary

The Higher Education Program in the Andrew Young Center [AYC-HEP] at Morehouse College and the Bard Prison Initiative [BPI] are pleased to announce the establishment of a Faculty Fellowship to support the higher education in prisons program. Morehouse College seeks a faculty fellow who will support the AYC-HEP program in the form of teaching, academic advisement, faculty training, student mentorship, and the supervision of day-to-day operations and educational programming inside the Federal Correctional Institution—formerly the US Federal Penitentiary—in Atlanta [FCI-ATL]. This person will serve as the primary liaison between the AYC-HEP program at Morehouse and our students as well as the staff inside the FCI-ATL. Required Qualifications

Ideally, candidates will have a PhD, or the highest degree available in their discipline, and some experience teaching inside prisons; experience teaching inside is not, however, required.

Ideally, this faculty fellow will exemplify both the wisdom of an experienced scholar-teacher and the organizational skills of an administrator

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Candidates must have college-level teaching experience.
  • This position requires a high level of organization, close communication with colleagues, timely follow-through, and consistent leadership.
  • The BPI/AYC-HEP Faculty Fellow – Assistant Director must meet all clearance requirements with the Bureau of Prisons and also, ideally, the Georgia Department of Corrections.
  • This person must have personal transportation to the FCI-ATL and other facilities.

Compensation

Based on qualifications and experience, the salary range is between $67,500 and $70,000, plus fringe benefits. This is initially a two-year appointment with the possibility of renewal. It is a full-time 12-month position that begins January 6, 2025.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

  • Maintain a thorough understanding of the Morehouse student body at the FCI in Atlanta as well as the GA-DOC sites where we teach, and act as the principal liaison between students in the FCI and the AYC-HEP administration;
  • Assisting and coordinating with the program assessment specialist
  • Participate in the recruitment and enrollment of our scholars inside FCI-ATL;
  • Manage clearances and mandatory training for HEP-affiliated faculty and students, including mandatory training for faculty by the Bureau of Prisons;
  • Ensure that classes, tutoring, and other on-site activities run smoothly and on schedule.
  • Supervising and mentoring the AYC-HEP faculty affiliates who teach inside FCI-ATL.
  • Develop good working relationships with the FCI administration and staff.
  • Maintain day-to-day communications for general program operations;
  • Assist the AYC-HEP Director with the training and support of both the teaching affiliates and the student ambassadors
  • Coordinate with faculty and the administrative assistant on the purchasing of books and printing of supplementary curriculum materials;
  • Serve as an academic adviser to student cohort inside the USFP in Atlanta;
  • Teach at least one course per year at the FCI;
  • Maintain accurate and detailed student records of all enrolled students;
  • Troubleshoot problems as they arise.
