Campbell University, Second Chance Initiatives: Sampson Site Coordinator/Advisor

Position Summary:

The Sampson Site Coordinator/Advisor is the key interface between the students and staff at the Sampson Correctional Institution and the main campus. This position provides support, advising and counseling for students, and supports and problem-solves for faculty teaching in the program. The Coordinator/Advisor is instrumental in guiding incarcerated students to success in their program and identifies and provides resources needed for success. The Coordinator/Advisor interfaces with staff at the prison system and at Campbell University, under the direction and with the support of the Assistant Dean of Second Chance Initiatives. This position involves working at the Sampson Correctional Institution, with regular (weekly or semi-weekly) travel to and from the main Buies Creek campus.

Campbell University anticipates this position to be a one-year opportunity with the potential for extension based on performance and organizational needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as advisor to students in the Sampson prison program, including teaching the COSU course and guiding students through their courses and programs.
  • Coach students in interpersonal behavior, communication skills, working with faculty and others.
  • Interface with the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections (NCDAC) regularly, including the Warden of Sampson Correctional Institution, Deputy Warden, Education Officer, case managers and other staff. Communicate needs and challenges to faculty and staff within Adult & Online Education (AOE), working closely with the Assistant Dean of Second Chance Initiatives.
  • Interface with faculty, communicating needs and challenges to staff within AOE and DPS.
  • Problem-solve issues and challenges for faculty teaching in the program, including (but not limited to) technology issues, teaching remotely, prison requirements, and other challenges.
  • Coordinate and arrange for resources and student support from different units within Campbell, such as Student Support Services (tutoring) and the Campbell Library, as well as with AOE.
  • Determine needed resources and tools (e.g., calculators) for students and faculty, and purchase them as needed for instructors and students.
  • Identify appropriate textbooks, coordinating with main campus department chairs and the instructional faculty. Order textbooks, coordinating with Bookstore, publisher and others to obtain hardcopies for all books and materials.
  • Enter data into the university IT systems such as Blackboard and Colleague.
  • Regularly pick up materials from Campbell (e.g., library resources, textbooks, calculators, classroom resources) and bring them to Sampson and back for distribution to faculty and others.
  • Supervise the work of the Teaching Assistant at Sampson, who provides support for copying, tech issues, etc.
  • Collaborate with NCDAC staff to identify a new cohort of students (annually or bi-annually), evaluating candidates for the program and making admissions decisions.
  • As part of the admissions process, collect and verify credentials and transcripts from high schools, students, parents and other sources.
  • Build strong working relationships with people within the prison as well as within Campbell, including vocational and educational staff, students, the Warden and Assistant Warden, and others.
  • Guide and advise the Student Advising Group for Sampson Corrections.
  • Assist in planning and organizing graduation of Sampson students.
  • Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor at all times.
  • Uphold and abide by Campbell University policies and procedures, including but not limited to Title IX, and Information Security, including but not limited to FERPA and other state and federal mandates.
  • Uphold and abide by NCDAC policies and procedures.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree required, or 5 years’ experience with higher education and an associate degree.
  • Experience with prisons and in particular prison education highly desired.
  • Two more years’ experience in a student advising or coordinating role desired.
  • Experience in a higher education or non-profit sector is also desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively to all groups through both oral and written channels.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational and time management skills
  • Comprehensive computer skills, with the ability to learn and utilize new and emerging technology.
  • Familiarity with software systems such as Student Information Systems and Learning Management Systems. Ability to learn Blackboard and Colleague, as well as web-based applications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint and common methods of digital communication such as web conferencing, web/text/ chat platforms
  • The ability to work effectively with a wide range of people in different context and cultures, including staff at Sampson staff, incarcerated students, technology staff, DPS services staff, and others.
  • Demonstrate tact, a positive attitude, courtesy and discretion in dealing with students, faculty, prison staff, NCDAC staff, Campbell staff and others.
  • The ability to work independently as well as function effectively in a team and within a diverse group of people.
  • Exercise independent judgment in complex, new, and/or stressful situations. Work without immediate on-site supervision.
  • Manage multiple, concurrent projects, and meet set deadlines.
  • Adaptability, flexibility and a willingness to work in a changing environment.
  • Ability to work regularly in a prison setting, and weekly travel to/from Campbell’s main campus.
  • Ability to drive, and current driver’s license.
