Community Conversation: Understanding the Technology Ecosystem for Higher Education Programs in Prison

Join us on September 17th at 3pm ET for an insightful discussion with experts from RTI International and Ithaka S+R. They will share lessons learned from their recent projects to document and strengthen access to technology in prison education programs.

Moderated by Alliance staff, this session will provide a comprehensive overview of the IT infrastructure and instructional strategies necessary to support quality uses of technology in correctional education. Panelists will share practical examples of how technology can effectively enhance learning outcomes for incarcerated students and discuss the technical assistance needs for leveraging these tools to their fullest potential.

  • Jordan Hudson, RTI International
    Jordan Hudson is a research education analyst with more than 10 years of professional experience in methodological and analytic roles in education research. Mr. Hudson is proficient in qualitative and quantitative data analysis, report writing, and managing data collection activities, with multi project experience leading tasks and managing projects in education research with an emphasis on education technology. His recent work includes technical assistance for education technology in corrections, and effectively integrating and using technology in correctional education classrooms.
  • Michelle Tolbert, RTI International
    Michelle is a senior program director with RTI International. She has 20 years of experience conducting qualitative research and analysis and providing technical assistance to states and programs in the areas of prison- and jail-based education and reentry, college and career readiness, transitions to postsecondary education, and state and federal policy. Her work includes conducting an evaluation of the Ready for Pell initiative, leading the U.S. Department of Education’s Integrated Education and Training in Corrections project, and developing the U.S. Department of Education’s Reentry Education Framework and Toolkit.
  • Laura Rasmussen Foster, RTI International
    Laura is a senior program manager at RTI, where she manages projects focused on improving education and training policies, programs, and resources for federal and state clients. She conducts qualitative research and analysis and provides technical assistance (TA) to states and programs in the areas of adult education, career and technical education (CTE), correctional and reentry education, and workforce development. Her experience includes creating TA and training resources on designing integrated education and training programs in corrections and effectively using technology in education programs offered in prisons and jails.
  • Ess Pokornowski, Ithaka S+R
    Ess is a researcher and writer who works primarily in Justice Initiatives at Ithaka S+R, studying how policy, technology, and practice intersect in higher education in prisons. Broadly, their work focuses on issues of censorship and self-censorship, and educational access and equity.
