NCHEP 14 Financial Aid

The Alliance for Higher Education in Prison is offering a limited number of financial aid packages for NCHEP 14 in New Orleans, LA. We value our community’s attendance at our biggest event of the year and we encourage anyone who needs financial support to apply for full or partial aid.

Financial Aid Application

Financial aid is available to anyone attending NCHEP 14. The Alliance prioritizes applications from formerly incarcerated attendees and considers a range of factors in the decision process.

Due to the overwhelming response for financial aid opportunities over the past few years and the limited funds available, this year’s financial aid process will be competitive. We currently have funding for ~50 full financial aid scholarships and we are now accepting applications.

Applications are due by October 15, 2024 and we will send award notifications by mid-November 2024. Alliance staff will review applications once the portal has closed. While formerly incarcerated applicants are prioritized, we use a rubric to evaluate applications based on other factors as well, such as prior financial aid support and short answer responses.

We aim to secure more funding for financial aid packages, but we cannot guarantee it at this time. If additional funds become available, we will revisit the existing list of declined applications and offer packages based on their original ranking, continuing until all available funds are allocated. Please direct any questions to nchep@higheredinprison.org.

Types of Financial Support

Applicants can apply for some or all of the following types of support.

REGISTRATION

Last year, the cost of conference registration was $350. While we have not yet finalized the price for NCHEP 14, please know that we are committed to making the event both affordable and exceptional for all attendees. We are mindful of rising costs, and any adjustments to the cost of registration will reflect our dedication to providing a valuable and unique experience for everyone involved.

Registration opens early January and will close once we hit capacity.

TRAVEL

Flights or other forms of travel to New Orleans will be covered for financial aid recipients. Financial aid recipients must book their travel through the Alliance for the cost to be covered upfront. Flights and other forms of travel booked outside of the Alliance can be submitted for reimbursement. Information on this process will be provided with award packages.

HOTEL

The Alliance will reserve hotel accommodations for financial aid recipients for April 9-April 11 (3 nights). Financial aid recipients planning to stay at the conference hotel for additional nights (prior to or following the conference) will need to book these reservations independent of the accommodations booked by the Alliance and pay for these accommodations on their own.

Please Note: Financial aid recipients who elect to book their stay independent of the Alliance (i.e., through an online booking platform) can submit documentation for reimbursement; however, we cannot guarantee that it will be eligible in every case. More information will be provided with award packages.

ADDITIONAL COSTS

A limited number of meals are included with NCHEP registration; however, the food services may not fully cater to the needs of all attendees. A Visa gift card in the amount of $100 will be provided to financial aid recipients to supplement food costs.

Additional reimbursements include:

  • Travel to and from the airport
  • Food up to $50.00 on travel days

More information about how to submit reimbursement requests will be provided with award packages.

THE DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING FINANCIAL AID APPLICATIONS IS OCTOBER 15TH, 2024
